What is a KTV? KTV vs karaoke vs lounge in Vietnam
If someone has invited you to “go KTV” and you are not sure how that differs from ordinary karaoke, the short answer is: room grading, billing, and the language of service.
What KTV stands for
KTV is short for “karaoke television”. The term started in Taiwan and Japan before spreading to mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore, describing private rooms rented by the hour with their own song-picker screen inside.
In Vietnam the word carries an extra practical meaning: a venue built for Chinese-speaking guests. The markers are a large Chinese song library, a picker screen in Chinese, and staff who speak Chinese.
Three differences from family karaoke
First, room grading. Family karaoke usually offers a few general room sizes; KTV grades by party size — 2–5 guests, 6–10 guests, and VIP rooms for 10–20 or more, typically with a long table, wrap-around sofa and their own LED rig.
Second, billing. Family karaoke tends to charge one hourly rate; KTV charges hourly or per room, and the gap between a small room and a VIP room is wide. Drinks are separate and usually exceed the room charge.
Third, hours. Many KTVs run until 3–4 AM, and some open as early as 11 AM–2 PM for daytime entertaining. Family karaoke generally closes earlier.
KTV versus lounges and clubs
Lounges and clubs are open spaces: a stage, a DJ or live band, guests seated across a shared floor. KTV is the opposite — each group gets a closed room, picks its own songs, controls its own volume, and nobody next door hears it.
That makes KTV suited to business entertaining, groups who actually want to talk, or a private birthday. If you want a DJ and a crowd, a lounge or club is the right call instead.
Worth knowing before a first visit
Each venue has a limited number of good rooms, so Friday and Saturday nights are effectively full without notice. Two to three hours ahead is enough on weekdays; a day ahead for weekends or a VIP room.
